Winter is For Snow Part 2: Snowflake Bentley

I'm sure we've all seen or used this book before.  My second graders loved it.  Especially popular were the photos of the ice crystals Bentley photographed featured at the end of the book.  I used this book not just for cutting snowflakes but also for portraiture!

We talked about how bundled up Bentley had to be to work out in the cold snow every time he wanted to photograph the ice crystals and made a list of everything he needed to wear: coat, boots, warm gloves or mittens, hats, and scarves.  Then I showed the class how to draw themselves all bundled up!  We drew in pencil, colored in crayon and then used scissors to cut ourselves out and glue them to a sky blue background.  I had them use oil crayons for the snow around them.  We then glued those papers onto a larger paper for a frame and added the cut paper snow crystals as the finishing touch.

As a bonus cross-cultural link we also discussed that the art of folding paper to create sculptures is called origami, but the art of folding and then cutting paper to create images is called Kirigami.  Every time you cut snowflakes you are using the art of Kirigami!

Teacher Example Number 3 - I have six second grades so I wound up with quite a few of these!

One of the Classroom Teachers even used them for a bulletin board. You can see we're awfully tired of snow days!
